TAXATION Tax Awards 2011 - Review

Friday, 27 May 2011

By Simon Godley

This year’s LexisNexis Taxation Awards were held last night on Thursday, 26th May, at the London Hilton Park Lane. Attended by Talentpool’s Director Simon Godley, the hotel's ballroom was packed with approx. 800 tax specialists from all corners of the UK tax market. This year’s comedy entertainer (warm up act before the awards ceremony) was stand-up man Sean Lock from TV shows '8 out of 10 cats' and 'TV Heaven, Telly Hell'. He was the natural funny man, although once or twice stepping over the political correctness threshold, although by this stage the lively tax audience didn't seem to mind too much.

Of course the main event of the evening is the awards ceremony itself, this year presented by TV celebrity Natasha Kaplinsky. Below I can reveal the winners of each category:

Best International Tax Team – PwC M&A Tax Team
Best tax consultancy team – E3 Consulting (Property Tax Specialists)
Best high net worth team tax team – Deloitte International Private Client Team
Tax writer of the year – Graham Elliott, Hays Macintyre
Best in-house tax team – Dixons Retail
Best tax investigations team – McGrigors Tax
Best technological innovation – IRIS Accountancy Solutions
Best general tax practice – Wilson Partners
Best VAT team – McGrigors Tax
Taxation’s rising star – Zoe Wyatt, Haines Watts
Best tax team in a law firm – Burges Salmon Tax Team
Best tax team in a large firm – BDO
Best Big Four tax team – Deloitte Dispute Resolution Group
Lifetime achievement award – Bruce Sutherland
Tax personality of the year – David Gauke MP

A big congratulations from Talentpool to all the winners, and a big Thank You to Alan James at Vertex GTS for inviting me onto his table at the event. For more information on Vertex's indirect tax technology solutions, visit their website.

We look forward to having the chance to attend the awards again next year.

Corporate Tax Accountant - Change Career Direction

Monday, 16 May 2011

If you are an in-house Tax Accountant in the UK or Europe, or tax compliance specialist looking for a route out into a more IT based career, then you should read on and find out more about the following opportunity:

Tax Accountant - re-skill into Tax-IT Systems
London £40,000 - £60,000 + Bens
High calibre software business, with continued growth success in the UK, now seeks to recruit a tax systems implementations adviser. This is a great opportunity for either a Tax Accountant or tax reporting specialist to transfer those skills into an IT role, and to learn and train into additional new skills in the IT / ERP / accounting systems market. This role will be involved with the business analysis and design phase of a tax reporting solution for large corporate clients, and then working on the roll-out and configuration of the software with a clients' ERP / accounting systems, system testing through to go-live of the project. The company will provide the specialist IT training required to carry out this role, although strong Excel skills (pivot tables, knowledge of macros) and a grasp of database construction (e.g. MS Access / VBA) will be a strong advantage, although not essential. We are mostly looking to consider bright, technically-minded and IT-savvy corporate tax accountants or tax compliance professionals with a strong academic track record, ideally qualified (ACA / ACCA / ATT / CTA), now looking to move away from practice or industry and refocus in the high growth field of tax-IT systems. In addition, you will have good client handling skills, able to manage and exceed customer expectations, and be flexible to travel to client locations (London / rest of UK / occasionally into Europe).

VAT Software - new opportunity

Tuesday, 10 May 2011

Currently one of my key clients is searching for a VAT Accountant or VAT adviser from practice to take on a client handling tax software role:

London / Salary up to £45,000 + Benefits
Well established business software group in London now seeks a junior level VAT Accountant or client VAT Adviser to transfer their technical skills into a VAT software & systems role. This role will liaise with large corporate clients (FTSE groups and large in-bound multinationals) to integrate and configure VAT software with client accounting systems. You will be heavily involved with both the initial client set-up and providing training to software users. In due course, this role can lead to a more senior client service role or into software development. To match the requirements of this role, you will either have experience in VAT compliance / advisory with a large practice firm, or as a VAT Accountant with an international business. Either ATT qualified or part-qualified ACA / ACCA level is appropriate, and wishing to continue with further study. In addition, you will enjoy IT work - adapting & modifying Excel spreadsheets, SAP user and/or working with IT databases are very relevant skills, but not essential. This is a great opportunity for someone to move away from mainstream VAT compliance work and make a success in the growing IT-VAT systems market.
