Job web searches - seeing the whole picture?

During a recruitment conference yesterday, a chap called Bill Boorman gave a very insightful talk into how the web / Google now operates when we search. His main point was that when we do a web search now from a particular device OR just go on-line (compared to say 5-6 years ago), the results you get are somewhat warped / skewed towards your 'on-line identity' i.e. they are influenced by what you have previously searched on / liked on Facebook / connected to on LinkedIn etc / bought on Amazon, thereby narrowing the search results you get to what Google thinks you want to see, compared to a completely unbiased set of results.

I had started to notice this trend from my own searches.  For example, when browsing on Amazon, Reed.co.uk popped up in the corner with some links to jobs that I might be interested in.  These tax technology jobs that were popping into my frame of view were ones that I had actually posted on Reed as a recruiter!

So we all now have an on-line identity, whether we like it or not, which is made up of a vast data set recorded (and presumably held somewhere in the cloud / servers) which is an accumulation of results from our previous on-line behaviours.  There is a book called Dataclysm by Christian Rudder that expands on this subject in much more detail, which I intend to read.

This has quite deep implications for the recruitment world - when you are looking for a new job through various web searches, the results could be highly skewed to your on-line identity and present you with jobs that Google 'thinks' you want to see, and thereby not showing you a load of other links to jobs that you might want to see.  I'm not sure how this influence can be managed or changed, but it doesn't feel quite right.  Maybe the effect is quite small, I'm kind of hoping it is.

It is also added evidence that if you want to get noticed on the web (either for providing a service / product or otherwise) you need to be very active all over the virtual world to plant data points that will put you in the line of view when others are searching similar data points, I think?
